What Is Domestic Violence and What Are Its Effects?

what-is-domestic-violence-and-what-are-its-effects

Domestic violence tends to be presented as easily solvable in the media. Often, news coverage would focus on the more controversial parts of the story and the extent of the injuries of the victim instead of the context and the history of violence by the perpetrator.

This representation contributes to the simplistic understanding of the issue and to the social stigma that silences domestic violence victims.

Thus, as a provider of counseling services in Palmdale, California we are providing a briefer on domestic violence—what it is and what its effects are not only to the victims but also to the children involved.

Domestic violence is a pattern of physical, sexual, emotional, or financial abuse of one person by an intimate partner, family member, and other household members who may or may not be living with the victim. This affects people from all walks of life and impacts generation after generation, causing a strain and ultimately breaking up families. In particular, domestic violence results in the following:

Children, whether they are directly involved or not, also suffer from consequences and would greatly benefit from personalized mental health services from a licensed therapist in California or elsewhere. Among such consequences include poor grades and/or dropping out of school, development of eating disorders and PTSD, having low self-esteem, engagement in other risky behaviors, suicidal tendencies, and getting in trouble with the law.

The journey to a full recovery from domestic violence is one that is exhausting and daunting, but you don’t have to go at it alone. At Mind Body & Spirit Counseling Services, a dedicated psychotherapist will be with you every step of the way in a supportive, confidential, and non-judgmental environment.
